What’s Your Yoga Style?

A common question among new yoga students is what type of class or style is the best for me.   There are many different styles of yoga, Ashtanga, Iyengar, Yin, Baptiste, TriBalance and many others.  Within those styles there are many subgroups of styles too.  Although some classes are geared more for beginners, I do not believe that it is much about the style or class as much as it is about the student/teacher connection.  It is important to have a connection with the teacher.  It is important when you begin anything, not just yoga, to be patient and have a beginners mind.  A question I ask new students is did they go on the expressway the first day they drove a car.  When you begin driving you usually go to an empty parking lot or other open area.  Once comfortable slow side streets, busier roads and eventually on the highway for a short drive.  The approach to yoga should be the same. It is more important to just go through the experience rather than have expectations or demand results.  Yoga a science of self discovery goes beyond asana or the physical practice.  It is within our society that people see someone in an advanced pose and believe that to be yoga.  If someone is bending down palms flat on the floor and thinking about what to eat for lunch, they are just folding forward. Yoga is more about the state of mind as you are experiencing the movement.  I believe that it is important to not judge yoga based off of one class or teacher.  As with anything it is best to be practiced.  Experience a variety of teachers or even studios before you weigh in.  As far as the best style all styles a great for someone. The best yoga style, that is also the most universal is Yoga Lifestyle.  When you make yoga, not the physical practice alone, a part of your life, you will begin to experience and see things in a different way.  So what’s my style?
